Murray Grey Beef Cattle

Australian Cattle for International Conditions

The season has been the best for some years and entries to the Commercial and Prime Cattle section at Crookwell Show on Saturday 12 February reflected this. The judge, Steve Ridley of Elders Goulburn, was presented with cattle in prime condition for his scrutiny. There were 69 cattle entered by 13 exhibitors across Angus, Hereford, Limousin, Murray Grey and Santa Gertrudis breeds plus crossbreds.

At Crookwell Show the commercial cattle always attract a good crowd of interested and knowledgeable spectators and luckily the rain of the previous night held off for the judging.

Cadfor Murray Greys repeated their success of last year. Cadfor cattle won the Supreme Commercial/Prime Exhibit, the Breeders Group, Champion Vealer and the Champion Commercial female against all breeds.

It was rewarding to win for a second year but with a different cow under a different judge. Winning the Mervyn Plumb Perpetual Trophy for Champion Vealer was a special thrill. It is a keenly contested class and a prestigious award.  There were many crossbred calves entered and Murray Greys demonstrated once again that it is one breed that can more than hold its own.

Last year the winning vealer was a 9 month old steer running on the Champion cow. This year the Champion Vealer was a 312 kg steer by Wallawong Rocket not yet 7 months old from a first calf heifer. Rearing the Champion Vealer was a special effort for a heifer and we have great hopes for this female in future.

Murray Greys did very well against all breeds in the steer competitions. Three Murray Grey steers exhibited by Allan McCormack won the pen of steers while Murray Grey steers exhibited by Elizabeth Fields filled the top three places in the led steer section pushing entries from other breeds out of the placings.

Hi Rod and Helena

Thanks for putting up this report and to yourselves and the other MG people for going to the effort of presenting your cattle and doing so well.
